THE FIVE-STAR "BIG BEAT" 2010 ROCKS NORTH AMERICA AGAIN
AND RAISES $54,000 FOR CHARITY! The sound of drums rumbled across North America on November 7th, 2010, as 15 Five-Star drum shops held the third annual Big Beat. Nationally, over 1600 drummers participated, playing the same groove at the same time via an internet connection, along with approximately 6000 spectators at the 15 locations. Nearly $54,000 was raised for charity and about 6000 pounds of food was collected! At the Oregon Big Beat held here in Portland, we had 129 Drummers, 14 performing groups on 2 stages, and hundreds of spectators. We had drumsets, hand drums, the St. Helens High School drumline, electronic kits, a samba section, and other percussionists. Our youngest drummer was only 12 months old, and the farthest distance traveled to get to our event was 2500 miles...this by our conductor Brian Davis, who played the night before in Hartford, CT, and left Oregon Big Beat to play the following night in New York. He flew back to Portland just to be a part of our event! Locally we brought in $5776 and 435 pounds of food for the Oregon Food Bank. We gave away, auctioned, and raffled off $16,000 worth of instruments. Three local television stations captured our event and gave us great coverage. And congratulations to Parkrose Middle School on being awarded a NEW Adams Xylophone from proceeds from our 2010 Oregon Big Beat. Music teacher, Randy McCray said, "Thank you, thank you, thank you. The kids can't wait to play it. This is the first xylophone this school has ever had, and the district is over 100 years old! We provide almost 100% of all beginning band instruments as our students can't afford to rent or purchase their own. Students who may be on the extreme edge of poverty are often provided instruments and supplies until they leave the program or graduate HS. We will always find a way and the MHOF instruments are helping us to better include and teach our students. Thank you!" | ||||||||
