Oregon Big Beat 2011 will be a fundraiser for the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation, as well as for our local Oregon Food Bank. Last year we locally raised over $5776 and brought in 435 pounds of food. Nationally,
The Big Beat 2010 raised more than $54,000 and brought in 6000 pounds of food. Be a part of this Big Beat 2011 as we once again raise money for a great cause!
This year, Big Beat will be held simultaneously in 15 cities, including here in Portland...the Oregon Big Beat! What is Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation? Founded in 1996, MHOF donates new and refurbished musical instruments to under-served schools, community music programs, and individual students nationwide, in an effort to give youngsters the many benefits of music education, help them to be better students, and inspire creativity and expression through playing music. Since its inception, MHOF programs have benefited more than 500,000 students and have enabled hundreds of dedicated teachers to provide a better learning experience in school. We have been guaranteed by the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation that money raised at our local Oregon Big Beat event will stay in our community and be given to a local school or schools. Each spectator and/or participant should bring 2 cans of food to the Oregon Big Beat, so that we can donate to our local food bank...just in time to help families for the holidays. Congratulations to Parkrose Middle school on being awarded a new Adams Xylophone from proceeds from our 2010 Oregon Bigbeat. Music teacher Randy McCray, said: "Thank you, thank you, thank you. The kids can't wait to play it. This is the first xylophone this school has ever had, and the district is over 100 years old! We provide almost 100% of all beginning band instruments as our students can't afford to rent or purchase their own. Students who may be on the extreme edge of poverty are often provided instruments and supplies until they leave the program or graduate HS. We will always find a way and the MHOF instruments are helping us to better include and teach our students. Thank you!" | |
