Luis Conte will be conducting his drum clinic on Saturday, February 13th from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Rhythm Traders. Grammy-winner Luis Conte is a master of percussion. Born in Cuba, his celebrated career includes touring and/or recording work with some of the greatest names in contemporary music, including Carlos Santana ("Supernatural" album), Phil Collins, Eric Clapton, Madonna, James Brown as well as Cuban legends Arturo Sandoval and Cachao. He is a member of Cuba LA, and has numerous instructional DVDs and solo albums to his credit. He can be heard on the soundtracks to such box office smashes as Mission Impossible, Rain Man, Disney's animated Tarzan, and Dancing with the Stars.

Luis will present a lecture and demonstration. All jazz, Latin music and percussion fans are welcome. No need to be a drummer or bring a drum, just sit back and enjoy the ride. NEW CLASSES FOR 2010!!

SAMBA BATUCADA BASICS:


Brian Davis, Pink Martini Percussionist and Lions of Batucada director, will teach this class! It will be held at Rhythm Traders on January 9, 16, and 23rd from 4:00-5:30 p.m. Cost is $12.00 for drop-in, or $30.00 for 3 classes. This is ideal for all levels!

The classes will cover how to play Samba Batucada and the variety of instruments that make up a Rio- style bateria. Technique, time, and rhythmic designs will be emphasized. A focused and fun learning environment. Some instruments are provided.

AFRO-CUBAN RHYTHMS with MIGUEL BERNAL:

Study Afro Cuban rhythms of Cuba with master drummer, Miguel Bernal at Rhythm Traders! Miguel will teach building blocks of Cuban rhythms such as rumba, guiro, bembe, popular music, and the 3 cycles of Congo. Technique, as well as creative and improvisational rhythmic forms, will be explored. All levels welcome; students will get a chance to play multiple instruments such as clave, congas, and cajon, in a group setting where the focus is on getting the rhythm up-and-running, and having fun. Instruments are provided.

Miguel Bernal is a well-known batalero (player of the bata drums) from Havana, Cuba, and was lead percussionist for the Raices Profundas dance company of Havana for 20 years. Miguel has taught extensively at universities throughout the United States since 1996, including Humboldt University. He has performed and taught percussion on tours around the world including: Japan, Europe, South America, Mexico, and the United States. Top ranked by the Cuban government, Miguel credits his teacher, Pito el Gago for his influence and inspiration. Miguel brings to you extensive knowledge of Afro-Cuban rhythms, including: guiro, bembe, cycles of Rumba, cycles of Congo, and popular music.

    Born in Ghana, West Africa, Annoh's own style comes from jazz greats, such as Max Roach, Cosy Cole, & Elvin Jones. In addition to jazz, Annoh is a specialist in percussion and congas. He's played at the BBC studios in London, traveled through Africa, Europe, and the US. He's played with Highlife pioneer, E.T. Mensah, Obo Addy, and the Ghana Broadcasting Orchestra.     James Travers has studied and taught drums for over 15 years. His specialties include Timba, Salsa, Funk, and Reggae. He has been in many of Portland's top bands such as: Agua Miel, Rubberneck, Black Angel, Linda Hornbuckle, Bobby Torres, African Kings, and Mt. Hood CC Jazz Ensemble. James regularly travels to Cuba and is Portland's specialist in contemporary Afro-Cuban drumset/timbale applications. His teachers include Giraldo Piloto, Eduardo Velasquez, Jose Sanchez, & Ludwig Nunez.

    Alex can be seen around town performing with local bands, the Reggae Ambassadors and Tree Top Tribe. His style is influenced by many greats such as Dafnis Prieto, John Bonham, Stewart Copeland, and Elvin Jones. Alex teaches beginner to intermediate levels, focusing on proper technique, reading, and timing.

    Carlton has worked with Tom Grant, Dan Siegel, Dan Balmer, Terry Robb, D.K. Stewart and Curtis Salgado, Leroy Vinnegar, Billy Eckstine, Bo Diddley, Jerry Hahn, Maryann Price, Mark Isham, Jim Pepper, Bobby Torres, James Cotton, Houston Person, actor Bruce Willis, Melissa Walker, Dianne Schuur, Larry Coryell, Danny Barnes, Bill Frisell, and Gordon Lee. Carlton has also worked under the batons of conductors including Pete Rugolo, Norman Leyden, and James DePreist. He is co-founder of The Carlton Jackson/Dave Mills Big Band.     Swing legend and Buddy Rich protege, Donny Osborne is a huge part of drumming history. He was first influenced by the amazing genius and technique of Buddy Rich, and by the skill of drumming greats Gene Krupa, Dave Tough, and Chick Webb.     A veteran percussionist of the Pacific Northwest music scene, Caton has performed with Northwest Afrikan-American Ballet, Dennis Springer Quintet, Andre Kitaev, Reparations, The Gary Small Band, Hungry Mob, Island Breeze, Steel Jammin', and Curare. Also a sideman with legends H.B. Barnham and The Supremes, featuring Mary Wilson. He offers several weekly ongoing classes at our shop.

    Derek has been studying Afro-Cuban and Brazilian Percussion for over 10 years with Masters in these traditions. He currently plays with Portland-based ensembles, Pink Martini, The Lions of Batucada, Omo Ire, Black Angel, and Substrat.
