Djembe Explore! is a djembe class designed especially for both adult and youth beginners. It starts at the VERY beginning. Learn hand techniques, posture, the various instruments, and basic rhythms. The Djembe 2 class assumes that you already have familiarity with the djembe, including hand technique and basic rhythms. This class is for intermediate and advanced players. This class focuses on the rhythms of Mali and Guinea. You will learn to play djembe and dununs, while continuing to work on bass, tone, slap, as well as hand techniques and rhythms with multiple parts. Intermediate players will come away with more knowledge of various hand techniques and rhythms, while advanced students will learn more complicated parts and breaks. Questions? Caton's Conga class is for absolute beginners through intermediate players. You'll explore hand technique and basic rhythms. This class focuses on the rhythms of Cuba, including basic Tumbao, Rumba, and Bembe rhythms. You will work on bass, tone, slap, and heel-toe hand techniques. Because these rhythms are layered with multiple parts, beginning students will play simpler parts, while intermediate drummers will be given more difficult ones. Afro-Cuban Rhythms	Currently available for private lessons		All Levels	Miguel Bernal
Miguel will teach building blocks of Cuban rhythms such as rumba, guiro, bembe, popular music, and the 3 cycles of Congo. Technique, as well as creative and improvisational rhythmic forms, will be explored. All levels welcome; students will get a chance to play multiple instruments such as clave, congas, and cajon, in a group setting where the focus is on getting the rhythm up-and-running, and having fun. An on-going workshop with instruction on how to play Samba and the wide variety of percussion instruments that make up the Brazilian bateria. Technique, time, and rhythmic designs will be emphasized in this class. The class is taught by various members of the Lions of Batucada. They provide a focused learning environment, open to all levels of experience. Dedicated practice will be the key to advancement. Goal-oriented individuals are welcome to aim for joining the Lions of Batucada, Portland's forty-some member performing escola. A great class for all abilities! Drum to the Drum...a Ghanaian Drum ongoing class for drummers of all levels. This class focuses on the social music called Kpanlogo from the Ga people of Ghana. Sentay is a fusion of dance movements and music that is based on traditional African ideals. Every movement has a meaning behind it both physically and in spirit. Sentay is a unique and fun way to engage in an aerobic workout, increase cardio health, increase flexibility while also working your muscles in ways that your body will benefit from....all to traditional African rhythms, Afro beat, Hip Life (modern African music) and reggae.
