Miguel Bernal: "Folkloric Conga Applications" Clinic
Monday, September 6th at 6:00 p.m.

 Join us for our FREE "FIRST MONDAY" workshop series on Monday, September 6th at 6:00 pm. Direct from Havana Cuba, Miguel Bernal is Portland's resident rumbero. Here, he'll present Folkloric Conga Applications, drawing from the rich traditions of rumba and bembe, and show the variations phrasing, and hand technique to make your conga sing! No drums required, this is a lecture/demonstration so just sit back and enjoy the ride whether you're already familiar with afrocuban traditions or just wanting to see an awesome player for inspiration and ideas.

Miguel Bernal is a well-known batalero (player of the bata drums) from Havana, Cuba, and was lead percussionist for the Raices Profundas dance company of Havana for 20 years. Miguel has taught extensively at universities throughout the United States since 1996, including Humboldt University. He has performed and taught percussion on tours around the world including: Japan, Europe, South America, Mexico, and the United States. Top ranked by the Cuban government, Miguel credits his teacher, Pito el Gago for his influence and inspiration. Miguel brings to you extensive knowledge of Afro-Cuban rhythms, including: guiro, bembe, cycles of Rumba, cycles of Congo, and popular music.

in Portland, Oregon!


Mark your calendar! Rhythm Traders is organizing the first annual Oregon Big Beat on November 7th, 2010. It will be the largest gathering of drummers in Oregon...EVER! The Big Beat is an event held in 15 cities around the country who simultaneously drum together. The event raises money for the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation that helps bring instruments to kids in our local schools.

We are looking for volunteers to help us! We will need help in the following areas: venue, sponsorship & fundraising, marketing & promotion, registration, show production, artist liaison, logo (for t-shirt and merch. sales), tech (video link, web site, sound, video), and student reps. We also would like help in identifying a local charity to give to in addition to Mr. Holland's Opus.
