Quick Intro To Electronic Drums

Electronic drumming is more than just another step in the evolution of drumming, it’s an essential part of the modern drumset. It’s rare these days to listen to a record or attend a concert where at least some form of electronic drums aren’t being used, whether it’s a drum machine pattern, electronic drum track or hybrid acoustic-electronic drum sounds. In fact, electronic drumming offers many advantages in concert, recording and rehearsal situations, including:

• Silent practice and “plug-and-play” practice with MP3s and your favorite streaming service.

• Programming and playing with loops and sequences.

• Creating, accessing, modifying and combining a wide range of high-quality drum, percussion and other sounds.

• Covering horn parts, bass lines, background vocals and percussion while sitting behind the drumset.

• Recreating studio sounds in live settings and interfacing electronic drums with computers at home or in the studio.

ELECTRONIC DRUM TERMINOLOGY

Controllers can be single or multi-zone drum pads or triggers that mount on acoustic drums. Striking the controller activates the sensor and sends an electronic signal to the sound module telling it to generate a sound.

Sound Modules use electronic circuits and components to synthesize sounds or playback digital samples (pre-recorded sounds). Sound modules are also called “brains” and may include other features such as programmability, memory, sampling or effects.

Please join us as we have a Q & A session with Roger North, the founder, inventor and artist behind the iconic horn-shaped North Drums. We will have an exquisite 6 piece North Kit on display during the talk. He’ll speak to the origins and construction of this kit and answer questions. As time allows we invite YOU to take it for a spin!

North Drums are horn-shaped drums that were designed to project their sound outward, so the audience can hear the most direct qualities of the drum. They were used by a number of notable drummers during the 1970s and ‘80s.

They were invented by Roger North in the late 1960s. Dissatisfied with the projection of his drum sound, North designed these drums to reflect sound forward. The first prototype, a 12-inch tom, was used at Woodstock in 1969. North then established a company and began producing the drums, which were popular with many notable drummers.

North initially made drums for himself and some friends but later decided to pursue commercial production after receiving a patent for the design. He built a small workshop and produced around 60 kits by hand.

North drums were used by many well-known drummers, including Billy Cobham, Alan White (Yes), Doug Clifford (Creedence Clearwater Revival), Lucky Lehrer of the Circle Jerks, and Gerry Brown. They were also used by drum corps like the Concord Blue Devils and the Long Island Sunrisers Drum and Bugle corps. Although primarily a Ludwig endorser, Alex Van Halen incorporated a set of North Drum toms in his enormous white touring kit for Van Halen's OU812 album in 1988. Chad Channing was known for using North Drums in the early years of Nirvana.

Starting in 1973, he began producing the original commercial configuration of the drums and began selling them both directly and through retail dealers to various top musicians and drummers as well as to the general public through retail dealers. In 1976, North licensed the patent rights to Music Technology Incorporated (MTI) to manufacture and market the drums in hopes of higher production and distribution volume. Under MTI management, the drum shells were produced first by a fiberglass manufacturer in Long Island, then for a time again by Roger North in his facility in Troutdale, Oregon.

What's the deal with snare drums?

We always like sharing valuable info to help you grow in different areas of drumming. Whether it’s gear, playing styles, or the latest trends, we’ve got you covered. Today, we’re taking a look at one of the most importnat tools in your kit — Snare Drums.

Why So Many Snares? Because One Size Doesn’t Fit All.

No two snares sound the same and Drummers know the right one can tighten a groove, cut through a mix, or warm up a tune. That’s why pros keep a few on hand.

What Shapes a Snare’s Sound?

The shell material is one of the biggest factors in how a snare sounds. Wood shells offer warm, deep tones and are super versatile. Looking for some warmth and body? Go with wood. Maple or Birch, in particular, work well for funk, soul, or studio work. Need some sharp attack? Try a metal snare like brass or steel. Perfect for rock, pop, or gospel when you need it to cut. Metal shells like steel, brass, aluminum, copper and bronze bring brightness and bite, each material has its own unique character. Want something totally different? Materials like carbon fiber, acrylic, titanium, and phenolic take the sound in a different direction.

Size Matters

Then there’s size. Diameter affects pitch. Smaller drums tend to sound higher and larger drums, generally, sound lower. Depth also controls dryness and resonance. A shallow shell gives you a crisp, dry pop and deeper shells add body and low end. Choosing the right combo of material and size can completely change how your snare fits into your music and even the way you play.

Selecting a pair of drumsticks is a deeply personal and important decision. The sticks you play with shape not only how you feel behind the kit, but how you sound in front of it.

That’s why drumstick manufacturers offer a wide range of models with unique combinations of material, weight, diameter, tip shape, taper, and finish each tailored to suit different playing styles and musical needs.

Key Factors to Consider

Length, Weight & Diameter
These determine the stick’s overall control and dynamic range.

Longer, heavier, and thicker sticks = more power and projection (ideal for loud or aggressive styles).
Shorter, lighter, thinner sticks = more speed and finesse (great for jazz, pop, and lighter settings).

Tip Shape & Material
Tip design affects how your stick interacts with cymbals and drums.

Large or flat tips give more overtones and a fuller sound.
Small or round tips offer more articulation and precision.

Rhythm Trader's Drum Kit for the month of November is the Yamaha Stage Custom in the Bop configuration. This small-diameter 3-piece kit features 100%, 6 ply birch shells which delivers the Stage Custom sound without compromise. It is ideal for jazz, light session work, performances in small venues, and all-around second-kit use. The kit come with a 12" Rack, 14" Floor and 18" Kick for the low price of $579. The Stage Custom Bop is available in 4 incredible finishes. Raven Black, Cranberry Red, Natural Wood (pictured) and Classic White.

The 12" rack tom and 14" floor tom is equipped with the YESS system which provides minimum contact of hardware with shell. New Ivory Coast Artist Series Djembes Just in!!!

Hey All!!

Just got in a few awesome Ivory Coast Djembes. These drums look and sound incredible. Handcrafted from Iroko wood, each drum features unique hand carvings, comfortable, rounded bearing edges, and interior spiral pattern to give it that distinct African sound. These are the same drums played by pros. They come with 3/16" low stretch rope and hand selected natural goatskin heads. The flat ledge at the bottom of the bowl helps keep the ring in place which allows for easy, even and consistent tuning. These drums are a bargain at just $595!!!

We also have Master's series ($199 or $150 with drum purchase) and Professional series ($89 or $60 with drum purchase) djembe cases to protect your investment.

If you already have a Djembe and it's in need of repair, we'll tune it up for just $10 (free if you purchased the drum from us!). We can also repair a broken head for as little as $100 depending on the size.

Up to 14 pads can be connected to the trigger input terminals that can be connected individually, making it simple to create a hybrid setup with acoustic drums. DTX-PRO is compatible with the iOS/Android App Rec’n’Share, allowing you to easily record or shoot a performance that is combined with audio data, then edit the recorded data, and share it on social media. After loading audio data on the App, you can add clicks, time stretch, A-B repeat and edit your video and audio right from the drum throne.

The DTX6 series uses 3-zone pads for snare, crash*, and ride. The snare offers the main articulations - head, closed rim, and open rim - and the cymbals offer edge, bow, and cup triggering. In addition, the cymbal pads can be choked or muted by grabbing the edge. This allows for a variety of performance techniques and lets drummers comfortably practice their accuracy.

The ride cymbal also offers positional sensing. This means the sound changes depending on where the cymbal is played. This feature is possible thanks to the high-definition long sampling of the cymbal sounds featured in the DTX-PRO sound module. It is perfect for accurately reproducing delicate cymbal work.

The wealth of practice functions featured in DTX Drums are also found in the DTX-PRO. Make the most of a sophisticated, programmable metronome, recorder function, 10 training functions ideal for developing a sense of rhythm, as well as 37 training songs that allow you to learn various genres. Yamaha Drum Event With Product Specialist Jim Haler Wednesday October 16 2-7pm

Come join us on Wednesday October 16 from 2-7pm and hang out with Yamaha product specialist Jim Haler. Any questions about Yamaha Drum parts, kits or history? Jim can answer them.

Jim Haler, Product Specialist for Yamaha Drums was born in Kansas City, MO. He began playing drums at age ten, studied private lessons from the age of 12. Jim joined the musician's union and began playing professionally at age 16, playing six nights a week in cover bands, outdoor theater, and casuals. He enlisted in the Navy at 18 and after attending the Navy School of Music in Norfolk, VA, was stationed in San Francisco with the Navy Band, touring across the country performing a wide range of music from rock, big band, and symphonic percussion. After his honorable discharge, Jim pursued his rock star dreams performing in a number of original bands in the San Francisco Bay Area. Jim also played often as a sideman for artists coming through the city and doing recording sessions. Jim began working in music retail in 1992 and joined Yamaha as Product Manager for Drums in 2003. Jim has worked in marketing, sales, customer and artist support, and product development where he has had a hand in developing new instruments, with several of his ideas making it to market. Jim has become the "go to" for Yamaha Drum history and is a subject matter expert in all things Yamaha Drums.

Hank’s Music Exchange, established in 2022, made the most out of limited space in the front of the Eastside Guitar Repair shop creating major impact with high volume sales. Owner Hank Failing is no stranger to the Portland music scene, having been active in local industry retail for over twenty-five years. Once he opened his own store, the former manager of Old Town Music quickly drew a cult following based on his encyclopedic knowledge of music gear and extensive list of contacts.

Newly Launched Brazilian Rhythm Lab At Rhythm Traders!!!!!

We're super excited to announce the recent launch of our Brazilian Rhythm Lab every Wednesday.

Brazilian Rhythm Lab with members of Portland Samba (Wednesdays 5:15-6:30pm): Designed for beginning students, established drummers wanting to probe deeper, and music teachers alike. Students will specialize in their chosen instrument (surdo, tamborim, repinique, caixa, pandeiro, ago-go, timbau, etc) in a low pressure and supportive setting while gaining familiarity with all the instruments used to play popular Brazilian rhythms including Samba, Samba-Reggae, Pagode, and Maracatu. For those performance inclined, this course will serve as an introduction and feeder group to local samba ensembles. This is Ongoing/Drop-in. Wednesdays 5:15-6:30. Bring your instrument if you have one but some instruments will be provided. Free class lesson with purchase of a Samba instrument. Taught in rotation by members of the Portland Samba community. $20

Instructor Bio:	Courtney Danley multi-percussionist fluent in Brazilian styles. She has been playing percussion since the age of 7 performing in elite youth and adult ensembles in a range of styles including marching percussion, Drum Corps International, band and wind ensembles, modern percussion ensembles, Senegalese styles and Brazilian percussion. Her passion is curating community through music performance fueled by love of Samba culture. A lifelong learner, Courtney has spent 14 months in Brazil playing in samba schools, learning from Master teachers. Courtney is founder of Go Samba, a Brazilian musical instrument import company specializing in hard to source drums from Brazil, is the Oregon Chapter Secretary for the Percussive Arts Society.
